Houston County is located in the central portion of Georgia. The county seat is Perry, but the city of Warner Robins is substantially larger in both area and population. There are other smaller cities and municipalities, like Centerville, within Houston County. The county was established on May 15, 1821, as one of five counties in the state. Later, Houston County was reduced in size when Bibb, Crawford, Pike, Macon, and Peach counties were formed, in part, from land that was Houston County. The geographic centre of the county was given the name Wattsville, which was later changed to Perry. It’s not clear why Perry instead of Warner Robins is the county seat.
Houston County is named after Georgia governor John Houstoun, with the spelling being a common 19th-century variation that later evolved to “Houston”. The pronunciation, however, remains to this day “howston.”. Don’t pronounce Houston County, Georgia, like Houston, Texas.
